Weight Watching  (2023)

Weight Watching takes its title from a play on the name Weight Watchers, closely associated with diet culture, weight control, and the continuous monitoring of the body.

The installation consists of intentionally uncalibrated bathroom scales arranged in a circle. Visitors are invited to step onto them, moving from one scale to another and encountering a different number each time. The act of weighing, usually treated as objective and definitive, becomes unstable.Because none of the scales offers a reliable measurement, the number loses its authority. What appears to be a neutral fact is exposed as something capable of shaping mood, behavior, identity, and self-worth.

The circular arrangement transforms measurement into repetition. There is no final scale, no correct number, and no stable result. Instead, the work reveals the extent to which the body is taught to seek validation through a system that continually changes its terms.

Weight Watching questions the power assigned to numerical measurement and the cultural structures that encourage us to watch, regulate, and judge our bodies. By disrupting the function of the scale, the installation opens a space where weight can no longer operate as a fixed definition of the body.
