Sugar Blues (2021 - 2023)

Sugar Blues (2021- 2023)

“It’s a prime ingredient in countless substances from cereal to soup, from cola to coffee. Consumed at the rate of one hundred pounds for every American every year, it’s as addictive as nicotine — and as poisonous. It’s sugar.”

“Sugar Blues” is an evocative series of 11” x 8” cyanotypes. It is Inspired by William Duffy’s book of the same name, this collection delves into the addictive and poisonous nature of sugar while exploring my struggle with sugar addiction and compulsive behavior.

Each cyanotype within “Sugar Blues” tells a unique story, visually capturing the omnipresence of sugar in our daily lives. By using sugar as both a medium and metaphor, these images confront viewers with the captivating allure and detrimental effects of this pervasive substance.

Through this body of work, I aim to raise awareness about the seductive power of sugar and initiate conversations surrounding addiction and self-destructive tendencies. “Sugar Blues” serves as a reflection of my own battle with sugar addiction, inviting viewers to contemplate the invisible hold it can have on our physical and mental well-being. It prompts us to question our complex relationship with sugar and its profound impact on our lives.
